To reduce the effects of solar warming on the waters near the beach, water temperatures are taken in the surf early each morning by the Lifeguard Division of the Los Angeles County Fire Department at Zuma Beach County Park. Temperatures at this site west of Point Dume are therefore thought to be representative of the nearshore waters.

Below are figures that we have modeled after the #ShowYourStripes Campaign (created by Ed Hawkins), to help us visualize how sea surface temperature has changed at Zuma Beach since 1956. The change in temperature is relative to the average temperature calculated between 1956-2023.
